Dial Restoration vs. Value vs. A good looking watch

Submitted by llattuca on

I'm new to collecting and new to this site.  I have primarily 1950's Bulova's and 1960-70's LeGant's and Orvins (department store watches).  I've sent several Bulova's out for dial restoration and lately I've been thinking that I may be devaluing the watches for the benefit of having a great looking watch.  What's the general consensus on When To Restore A Dial?

Thanks!!

Case measures 31mm lug to lug x 21mm non inclusive of the Crown using Calipers. Copper Dial shows Black printed Hour markers, Bulova signature and tracks. Hour and Minute Hands are Black Index style and a Modern style Seconds Hand shows on a sub Dial partially obscuring the marker at 6 O'Clock. Crown is signed Bulova. Caseback is Rose Gold and stamped as shown.

* Found as a non runner in a neglected condition. The Watch now sets, winds and runs although the regulator had to be positioned hard over for the Watch to keep time indicating a hairspring issue.

Watch Description

This watch belonged to my grandmother (she passed in 1994) and I don't know much about it.

I have taken it to a couple of jewelers/watch people and didn't get much information except what was on the inside.

Marks that are on the inside: Swiss / 5AB /  Seventeen Jewels / RS AF / BXW

On the inside 'side'  on the back is: XVIXVI

On the inside of the back are jewelers marks for repairs with the earliest being 1952.

The band is expandable (no latch), and has 3 sections that say " pat pend multi size" - i do not know if it is the original band.

I want to be educated about the watch!  So I am looking for any further information about the watch such as the exact year and what all the writing is.

* * * I did set the time and wind the watch (not much) and it kept exact time for 3 hours - until it was opened at a jeweler.

MyBulova, Simply the Best

I just wanted to express my appreciation to Stephen/Admin for the finest and most comprehensive vintage watch community that there is.

The vast accumulation of data and the format with which it is organized and presented, along with the intelligent, thoughtful interaction of the members is, quite frankly, awesome.

Stephen should be quite proud of what his ideas and labors have provided for anyone with a desire to learn more about Bulova watches.

1956 Honeycomb Dial ...What Model is this?

Submitted by daniel ruben on

I recently purchased this intriguing (to me) White color cased Bulova. The case back is correct, although not pictured. It is an L6 with a case no.29301. Im a new member so bear with me. couldnt figure how to get more than a Thumbnail photo attached. Dont even know if its attached! The dial is a honey colored Honeycomb textured dial. Measures 32 mm in diameter. I would love some help identifying it. No help from your site search. Hopefully someone recognizes this watch. Any help appreciated. Thanks, Dan

Sorry this has taken me so long to post it up after I got it but as most of you know I've been pretty busy the last few months.  Well.. this is the first one I've gotten... I believe this is NOS.The Jefferson.  We don't have an advert for this yet other than a very horrible catalog ad someplace you can barely make out it looks something like "Jefferson".  Well low and behold inside the case was the original hang tag! This watch is in pristine mint condition.  I haven't had one like it and certainly haven't seen one from the 1950's in this good a shape except for a couple that Oldticker had found in parts and was fixed up by Mike. I'm adding a few more pics just because I think this will be the primere go-to for this model in the future
