Looks to be a American Eagle with an original band.
Double date stamp of 1939-40 though the case indicates 1939.

Holy smokes!! Nice.
Confirmed ID for me.
$50> tonight on the bay.... saawwweet! Two American Eagles in a week for less than $80 bucks total. Not to mention that silly deal on the 36 Senator in the box.

Sooo...thats who outsniped me! should have known! : D
The seller had something in there about the band being broken, but it looks good to me in the pictures...American Eagle, variant unknown for now.
Boy I wish we'd be able to figure out what the "B" or "D" or whatever.
As you can see.... the band is absolutely the period as it can be seen in the Ambassador's ad above. Also, this watch has the dial of the American Eagle A.... and the case of the American Eagle C.
Who knows what the other combo's are?
nice American Eagle Confirmed from me. ...and figuring out those variants...well there's over 20 unique models listed btwn 1954 through 1964, including these 17 listed in Fall 1964:

'AMERICAN EAGLE' - unknown variant.

you got that right....without ads, there's soo many "chances". The "generic" model is sounding like the way to go on several of these types of watches...
