I think this might be an Academy Award Z, with a black ribbed dial. Shame there is a spot of glue on the top of the crystal
Well, this is an interesting one. As far as I know, no Academy Award watches were produced with a black dial. The "Z" had a gold ribbed dial with applied black numbers and black hands. The case does appear to indeed be AA"Z". It's possible the dial is either a third party replacement, or was refinished. If it was refinished, there is a good possibility that somewhere around the edge of the face there will be a "v" shaped notch that was used as a locator for a jig that held the face while it was being redone.
I will say it's a sharp looker.
The AA 'Z' has a gold dial. I don't find any ads for a black dial version, but perhaps it is an unknown variant letter not yet identified.
I would classify it as an Academy Award Z model from 1950 noting a likely dial refinish

That works for me. 1950 AA "Z" noting dial.
1950 Bulova Academy Award "Z" (refinished dial)
