It's a 23 for sure but it's not a black dial, it's Gray and some listings call it a Tropical Dial
If it wasn't so difficult to get the back on I'd submit a picture of just the dial itself. I'm afraid to damage it. already been thru that.
Actually in that case it's probably the 'A' variant as that one states 'Charcoal' dial and has the same case lugs and dial combo as the subject watch.

I found a 1959 sea King ad with the charcoal dial

Sea King is probably a 17 jewel watch.
Bulova 23, subject watch does not correspond exactly none of the variants

That seems to be an older ad.

The more I look at the subject the watch the more suttle differences I'm noticing. For example the odd (1,3,5,7,9,11) hours markers are diamond shapes were as all the Bulova 23 ads show the dial with a triangle.
Looks like the case style was used by the Bulova Beau Brummell, Clipper, Jet Clipper and Sea King models to name a few.
Is there a photo of the back case you can add?

I' get you one.

I had to send it in email, I have a hard time uploading here.
I'm three ticks for a Bulova 23 sans variant designation.
