Original Butler finish Dial shows Radium Arabic numerals, Bulova signature is applied Gilt and tracks are printed Black. Hour and Minute Hands are 'Cathedral style' and a Modern style Seconds Hand appears on a sub Dial partially obscuring the 6. A dust shield and Gold retaining ring appears over the Movement. Movement block is Gold. Crown is original. Caseback is stamped as shown. * Year of manufacture based on Case seriel number.

Is the shield symbol the 1929 squiggly shield or the 1931 straight shield. I am also in doubt about a 21j movement so early. e.g. My 1931 Lone Eagle sports a 9AT movement with 15j. All of the Series III advertised 17j.

That's a close call. The shield is stamped so close to a screw head I could barely make it out, in fact it was hidden by some 'dirt' (see the oily patch in the 2nd new pic at 9 o'Clock on the movement) which I gingerly brushed away with an alcohol swab. At first I thought a late 30's President but there are subtle differences. 2 steps to the case vs 3. The dial, hands and convex shape of the crystal all say late 20's early 30's. I'll look again.

The tonneau model was still being advertised as the current LE and reaching its marketing end of life after being so popular and drawn out for 3 years.
This model I beleive existed as another name and with the addition of some sporty stripes at the top and bottom was re-invented as the Series 3 Lone Eagle,.
Now to identify the model as it was know pre LE.

The only step-side watch made by Bulova in 1930 was the Gladiator & I don't think it was advertised, or I havn't seen the ad, but I have pictures of it. I believe Marks step-side has a 1931 case. The Bulova 21j movement was not ready for prime time in 1931. I would like it to be though. Mark it's a rare beauty.
It is a bell for 1929. Not the aforementioned squiggly shield. LOL

Slightly different case, but I tend to agree with Wayne the only other stepped case around this time similar is the Gladiator.

I think You're on the right track. - The lack of a seriel # on the movement interests Me. Covert pre release or a test run , first run maybe? I'll try to get a closer shot, til then there's this, which isn't very good.

21J...nah...it'll be a replacment movement IMO.
Scratch the Gladitor...case is way too different.
I gather the hinge has broken on the case.....The case is stamped 'Bulova' isn't it???

Yes, Bulova quality stamped inside the lid along with the 1927 pat date, no indication of the cases construction, non hinged.
If the movement isn't 1929 there's really no other way to nail the date on the watch.
