Help!

Submitted by FifthAvenueRes… on

I've got one stuck in the Caseback Gents, I mean stuck tight. Late 30's and looks like it's never been out! it's a runner so I need to use caution....any suggestions, freezer?

I have had a few that are stubborn, but I always got them out by pressing them in the case evenly all the way around , and gently working them out with my case knife between the dial and caseback. If your dial screws are loose, work it over a large uncluttered table or towel, because your going to pop the sub-seconds hand and probably more.

I'm good with smashoring it until it comes out  Then I send it to Mike to fix it.

Stop it Jerin - you're keeping scaring the kids. You can't just make up words like that.

haha, it's the 'smashoring' part I want to avoid and have You ever tried to find a sub Seconds hand after it leaves? I've found a stray Crown before 2 Months down the road (a small miracle) but the Seconds hands are like that missing sock...never to be seen again.

It looks as if the movement is in a shock ring so I may try to pry on it a little or just let the Watch Doc deal with it.

GENTLY pry around the ring supporting the movement, if it has one.  If not you will be prying against the movement itself in which case be careful that you do not do damage.  I would not use the dial as a pry point.  Not only could you loose some of the tiny bits but you could damage the dial as well.  Have patience and I'm sure you'll get it done.

I find it is best to do this with the watch and my hands inside a large freezer bag so when watch parts go-a-flying, they stay inside the bag.

Fifth any chance of a photo of the movement of the said late 30s watch.

Dial and Caseback - can't see the movement because I can't get it out.

I guess losing the Seconds hand is no big deal, there's only half of it, which is something I hadn't noticed.

'38 Knight, still runs.

Try prying in the corners on the top on bottom.  Looks to be a little lip there that you may be able to catch. Movement does have a ring.  Prying on this dial will do nothing.

Jay,

I'll try it. Is that the mvt or a ring?

For future reference, I use a Olfa razor knife to get under the movement retaining ring ,gently prying one end and then the other a 32nd of an inch or so till it releases evenly. You never ever want to use the dial for leverage. Just be careful, a razor knife will slice you good enough for stitches if you slip.

Head to ur local Lowes and by a yard magnet....its like a 2 foot long magnet on wheels...finds all of those tiny things in the shag carpet. But it is a magnet so de-mag what you find lol
