It came to me in fairly good condition, so not much polishing required. The case is base metal, so I avoid any polishing there; just a light wipe with cape cod cloths. You may be able to see some wear on the underside of the decorative end pieces. Perhaps from winding, which is difficult and only allows one to wind or adjust the hands by touching only the bottom of the crown. No room above the crown to fit a finger. I did not try to remove the bands, but it does appear that if the tabs that are folded over are straightened out, then the band would slide away from the case.
