1944 Bulova Minute Man is a good match.  The case is sterling and was used during late WWII since copper was in short supply and needed to create brass for bullet shells and other war efforts.  Silver was not needed as much as copper and steel.

The cases with the silver base will turn black over a period of time and will have to be cleaned to see the gold again because silver tarnishes and the tarnish will bleed through the gold plating. I originally thought someone had painted the case black on the first one I got like that.
