It appears We have confused this previously unseen Model with the 'AMBASSADOR' of the same era in the database. * For database reference only: note the Lug and Crown variation.
Looks like only one of the three in the database has been mis-ID'd as an Ambassador. That one is Gary's. His also looks to be an Oxford, if the recessed crown is the distinguishing feature.

And then we are to believe that this is a (17J?) "OXFORD," vs. one of the other two models, or the Illustrator wasn't "out to lunch" then, eh??? And ALSO that the model was SO popular... that they used a "C" style dial variant, reserved for very BEST sellers!?!

The case was"reused" to house an Ambassador dial/movement?
The Ambassador case was modified in 1939 or 41?
It's rather one of the other two models I mentioned, that likely ALSO look very similar?

The Dial isnt the issue, I have the same Dial in a 1940 'PRESIDENT'.
The Case differs to the 'AMBASSADOR'
The 'OXFORD' Case has a recessed Crown and slightly different lugs to the 'AMBASSADOR' Case.

Well done all, regardless of what you ID'd. It allowed us to really look at the detail of the case and as Jerin pointed out the small detail in the recessed crown that I missed.
Oxford with variant dial it is.
Since I am the quintessential "newbie" here it seem very obvious that this is indeed the Oxford and not Ambassador but regardless, it is one of the most beautiful watches I have had the pleasure of seeing. Super find and I am sure it is very highly prized by it's owner.
