This appears to be a 1938 Bulova Ambassador "C". First time I've seen this model for 1938. The case and case back are yellow gold with an engraving "To Charlie From Alphod". First time I heard of the name Alphod, very unusual. The movement is a 7AH 17 jewel with a crescent moon date code. The dial is back and gray with white hands. It has a replacement stretch bracelet. It needed a main spring, crystal and a complete service. Running and looking great. I've wanted one of these for a while.
The more I look at the ad the more I think this is not an Ambassador. The crown on this watch is clearly notched like the Webster whereas the Ambassador is not. I am now thinking this is a 1938 Webster based on this 1938 ad.

Well that now makes perfect sense, as we have a number of Webster's in the database that are a match for the subject watch.
1938 Bulova Webster for sure.
Yep you're correct., all the Ambasador "C"s we have do not have a recessed crown.
To save confusion, I've updated the watch listing to remove the Ambassador advert.
The black and grey dials are some of my favorites. A small window of a few years for them makes them pretty special. Glad you were able to find one even if it didn't end up being an Ambassador it is still just as nice.

Yeah that does look like a Webster... wonder if that dial is the only difference in model name as the Montgomery is pretty much the same watch.

I can confirm it is identical to the Montgomery. Here is a family photo of Webster, Montgomery, Ambassador and Lone Eagle all with tubular cases. You could say this is a totally tubular photo!
