Crystal replacment

Submitted by Gerard on

I have a 1931 woman's watch and need the crystal. The problem is it looks like the crystal was place from the inside and then was framed by another piece of metal to hold it. I cant slide a crystal into the grove. These pictures aren't great but you can see the grove. Any ideas would be great

You can see the grove in the first pic and the metal frame in the secound.

It looks like the crystal should set on the groove. There is nothing to allow a frame to go into the watch. Typically I have found  that glass crystals require glueing into place and that would make sense in this case. The crystal will not be a tight fit if it is glass hence the need for glue. If the crystal is plastic it might be a tight fit like a snap in. I may have a GS plastic crystal for the watch and will check my stuff for one.

The frame you refer to is the lip or step the crystal sets on, not really a groove. Looking at the first picture show the lip more clearly and the crystal should rest on that lip and be glued into place.

Hope this helps.

That picture is deceiving there is no lip its flush with the back piece.

Jp is correct. The crystal should rest on the inner lip.

Soak the bezel in accetone and use a tooth pick to remove the old glue before trying to put the new one in.

What are the dimensions of the opening? I may have a glass crystal .

Measured with a digital caliper  the outside is 16.1 x 11.3 at the widest point, the inside is10.7mm x 15.6mm

I've noticed on a lot of the older Cases, if not all, the shelf only has 3 ledges.

Why?

I honestly don't know. Possibly to aid in installation or allow for expansion and contraction of the Bezel?

This one has 4 and it looked like it had to fit in a grove so that is what I thought I was up against. Nice to know I was wrong :)

Well based on your measurements the only thing I have thats close is   15.47  X 11.13 and the small ends are 9.89. The curve looks about right but that wouldn't give you anything on the ends to glue to.

I am assuming this is a "T " and not an "MT". That's the way it looks in the pictures.

I don't know if this helps you any.

It is just a hair short, that to bad. Still looking for a movement. The original had rust and I don't think it will work even though its clean now.

Thank you for your help.
