Chronograph second hand sweep

Hi.. I have just bought Bulova Lunar Pilot with the beautiful dark blue and white face. 

I didn't really buy it for its chronograph capabilities but I was wondering if the large second hand can be left running all the time like, a normal second hand as I love the way it gracefully sweeps around the dial. 

I have read conflicting answers on this with some saying no as it will use battery up very quick and voukd cause wear and tear on the mechanism whilst others says they see no reason to not be able to use as a normal second hand. So I thought I would ask on Bulova specific forum. 

Would love to get some thoughts on this please.
