For the early 1923 to 1925 watches we have established that in most cases the 2nd number is the date code (not the first as with post 1924/25). We believe that 1925 was the year they cut over to the first digit indicator.

Prior to this most of pre 1924 Bulova watches have a case serial number staring with a '1', something we still don't fully understand. The weird thing is the cases predating '1' was actually '2' (used for 1917, 18 & 19).

Early case numbers arer still a bit of a mystery, but we have enough samples to at least say with a certain level of confidence that:

  • 1920 to 1923 - all seems to start with '1'
  • 1923 to 1925 - the second number determines the year
  • 1925 to 1949 - the first number determies the year

The subject watch having a second serial of '5' says to me it's an early 1925 Bulova 6511
