Well, I'd say he was some kind of a mentor that the "class of 65" thought enough of to take up a collection and gift it to him at graduation time. Based on them referring to him as "Smitty" instead of Mr. Smith, he probably wasn't part of the school experience. Maybe he owned the local Malt Shop where they all hung out, and he didn't kick them out for not buying anything........Maybe he was a classmate who got drafted or enlisted for Vietnam before graduation and it was a "going away present".  It's fun to speculate. I love engraved watches. :o)
