Over the years as gold prices fluctuate, there have been and still are, periods where there is an increased interest in melting everything down. Jewelry, watches, teeth....
What this translates to is that vintage gold cased watches are not as common as they once were, and some are downright scarce. Personally I hate to see any gold watch melted down unless it is a complete write off.
It will be worth whatever the gold is worth, a jeweller or watchmaker can remove the movt and weight the actual case and band and give you an idea of what the value is. I don't think you will have any trouble finding a buyer for it.
