As a follow up.
Tried using an accucell it now keeps perfect time. Within a few seconds a day.
Swapped the 344 back and it again gained 30 mins in 24 hrs.
Pretty conclusive test.
Will leave the accucell in place until I get it serviced. Then I will get it adjusted to run on the 1.5v cell.
