That post on the case back is like an "anvil" that the spring-driven, vibrating "hammer" strikes against to give the alarm a clear sound. All you are getting is the vibrating sound of the "hammer" hitting against NOTHING. The original case back was switched out for a crystal... not hard to do, but inappropriate.
