What as great heirloom to have from your Grandfather. The astronaut connection was that the accutron movement as used in spacecraft as timing devices on space and lunar missions. Astronauts did use the Accutron Astronaut which is a different model. This model originally was a salesman sample but so many people wanted the sample that Bulova started to produce them and jewelers started to remove the dials.
