I'm now wondering if there was a period (1948-49) where case date stamps were not used. We know that this period saw the change in date codes in general moving from symbol, to number, and then to code (L1), so just maybe the 1948 and 49 watches didn't have a clear case date indicator.
Despite the serial number starting with a "2", there really is no evidence that the case is from 1942. The advert and case engraving certainly indicate 1948/49.
Thoughts?
