Watch Description

Watch is yellow gold plate with a stainless back. White face with raised gold markers.and black printed seconds track and "Bulova" Case is the same as a Clipper and seems to post date that black lumed face model by a year. The last Clipper ads I find are dated 1945, while the newest one in the Db is 1944. Case s/n dating matches the movement and I don't find this face configuration in any other model, so it's highly unlikely this is a marriage of parts. Raised markers also suggest it's not a refinished Clipper black dial.. Clipper is a 17 jewel, this one is 15. Movement is double stamped with a triangle (1945) over the original circle for 1944.

Is this an unadvertised post war "civilian Clipper" or something else? I don't see another in the database.

Whatzit?

1945 Clipper ad.

1945 clipper ad

There is currently one rose gold example (also with 17 J, like the Clipper) in the Db dated 1944, tentatively ID'ed as a Tildon based on crystal specs?

I bid on Ebay for one of these a few months ago and did not win.  It might have been the same watch or another one.  I do not believe this to be a Tilden as it was pointed out this is a Westfield model name.   Certainly looks to be a Clipper variant but the jewel count is wrong so until something corroborates this it is an unknown.

I don't think it's a Tildon either. Just wanted to make note there are possible variants out there. This one was purchased by me as part of a large lot of watches almost a year ago.

Noting a notched dial, indicating redial, I would label this a 1945 Bulova Clipper as the case shape is quite unique (the movement may well be a replacement)

Good eye on the notch at 12, Geoff. I had to re-open the watch and look at it w/a magnifying glass....never saw it. I don't think it's a re-dial from black Clipper face, as the black face had painted (lume) markers and subject watch has raised gold. If anything I would suppose it was always a white dial and refinished. I may be wrong. If it is a replaced dial and movement, I can't find a possible donor watch in the database.

Very nice find!  It looks like a Clipper to me, unique case.  Most of the black dials seem to have come with a white variant version.

I'm good with the Clipper name.
