Watch Description

Gold electoplated, "disco volante" type asymmetrical case. Date.  White gold vignette, mixed gold baton indices No numbering, signed Bulova Accutron, aperture for the date.  My Dad received it as a present from a supplier because of my birth, 1974.

Serviced at Bulova until they couldn't find parts, once they wanted to buy it (in a very high price)  because it was a space something. My dad didn't want to sell it.

I could not find a match to this watch in any of the ads.  I would classify this as a 1974 Bulova Accutron Calendar.

My dad received the watch in Mexico from a Western Electric company sales person. Mexico Bulova service always told him it was an USA watch, could it be a Mexican edition.

An interesting case design and strange notch at the back top, which I'm not sure what's purpose would be.

I agree with Jim on this one.

The notch would appear to be for correctly aligning the back matching to the tab on back plate?

Yes, the notch fits in the hole of the back plate, this hole is aligned to the 12 hour index, the notch is almost totally covered by the closing ring.
