Recently picked this up off of eBay. I am a college football fan and have been on the hunt for vintage watches presented to the team I root for. Before purchasing this watch I did find two references that this was the model presented in the 1970 Orange Bowl. I find it curious that the year code is M4 however- 1964 watch for a game played January 1, 1970? Another 1970 watch I saw listed previously has a case number of 1-222646 and M4. I don't have a tool to take off the caseback. I do see USA through the battery hatch though. In the catalogs I wasn't able to find a direct match for a gold plated case the same shape with the crosshair lines. Unsure if this was a retail model or just built for gifts/ presentations.
I have a copy of the program for the game and on the inside cover is an Accutron advertisement with "Official Award Watch of Orange Bowl Game" at the bottom. Accutrons were presented at the Orange Bowl from at least 1970-1975. I'm not sure if 1968 or 1969 was a Bulova as well? There is a great history of watches being presented to players and coaches in bowl games, Bulova watches presented in 1940's Cotton Bowls. It would be great to have a full list of Bulova watches presented.
We see this dial used in the Accutron "218" which has a bow-tie case.
With the sporting dial watches it may be difficult to ID down to the variant and the mix of a 1964 case back with a 1970 dial complicates the matter.
Generally speaking we would ID as a 1964 Bulova Accutron.
Maybe someone else can help shed some light on the date variations.
Agree, not sure we have anything closer. 1964 Bulova Accutron
1964 Bulova Accutron works for me.
