I got one of these a couple of years ago. It indeed feels like a "beefy lug" Seamaster, and the Swiss Patent indicates that it was meant to be considered waterproof.

Here are the linebook references from 1959 and 1960. I don't find it after '60.
You can see that the bands changed from what was used in the 'R' variant years prior.
