Case measures 38.5mm lug to lug x 26mm wide non inclusive of the Crown while using Calipers. Original Dial shows a combination of raised Gilt Arabic numerals and Hashmark Hour markers. Bulova logo and tracks are printed Black. Hour and Minute Hands are Index style and an Index style Seconds Hand appears on a sub Dial totally obscuring the 6. I would disagree this Watch is the 'DELEGATE'
1. Hour and Minute Hands are Index style. 2. Caseback is Gold. 3. Case is longer than the 'DELEGATE' shown in the ad. 4. Case Horizontal detail differs from the Watch shown in the ad. These details do not match the image nor the descriptive text wthin the only known advertisement at this time.
* 4/6/2012 newly discovered display ad Dated 1957 .
Here is a 1953 ad.

Very, very close Wayne, but the Gold Caseback (the ad states Stainless Steel back) and Hand variation on this Watch remind Me more of an 'EXCELLENCY' ....and a lot can happen in 3 Years with Bulova.
I'm going to dig a llittle deeper.
In reply to Very, very close Wayne, but by FifthAvenueRes…
hands look brand new in the pics in comparison to the numerals....3 yrs...stainless back to gold back...I vote Delegate...with new hands. The stainless back is not an issue 3 years after this ad and the ad looks like the photo is 'scrunched', nothin in it looks quite right so I would say the rendering is off, not the watch.
At first glance I thought it was a Harrington, but the the case is not as detailed.
Dial and Bezel match the ad, what movement & date is on it Mark?
Greg,
Dial and Bezel match to the T - Caseback and Hands do not.
Unclear of the movement model, bought sight unseen but advertised as 21 J, so a 10 BM?
The only other late 40's early 50's pieces I've seen with a Gold back are Royalty, Excellency or AA's. Watch should be here next wek.
In reply to Greg, Dial and Bezel match to by FifthAvenueRes…
Could be that someone swapped hands years ago, but you are right, usually the high end watches from the 40's & 50's had a Gold filled bezel & back.
Interesting to see what shows up.
In reply to Could be that someone swapped by OldTicker
Which is another reason to assume that the ad was simply in error about the stainless back.
21 jewels = all gold, no stainless
All examples of this watch so far, including the subject watch, have 21 jewels and a gold back
21 Jewel 10 BM - L6
Gold Caseback - L6
Could the ad description be wrong or have We seen the 'DELEGATE' configured the way shown and described in the 1953 ad?
My Delegate is dated 1952 on the movement and 1954 on the case. It has a gold back, 21 jewels, 10BM movement. The dial on mine matches Fifth's and the ad. The hands on mine match the ad.
Personally, I have no doubt that, based on that ad, it is a Delegate, even though it has a gold back. Perhaps there was simply an error in the ad.
Interesting....
A VERY similar case, but slightly smaller than the other 1+ in the same case style???
