I just restored this Ashford for Jay Langley, lifetime friend. It was his father's watch.
I just completed restoring this Ashford for a longtime friend Jay Langley, it belonged to his father.
Great job. Ashford from me and very well done.
Who's Trademark is on the case? Diamond with an "E"
Nice work on the restoration Mike! 1948 Bulova Ashford it certainly is and a sharp one at that. No idea what the 'E' stamp is for.
Nice work Mike - Before I step into the Ashford ID could I see a photo of the case back? I'm not 100% certain this is a Bulova case.
The case back has no markings other than the diamond with an E and stainless
Since the bezel and the case back have that diamond E trademark, I think you have an after market copy of an Ashford case Mike. If it was a true Bulova case it would have Bulova or a least a B stamped on it and would have a 7 digit serial number. I may be wrong but I believe the Bulova Ashford cases had rolled gold plated bezels and backs.
I was thinking that because it has a 1948 movement that maybe it was an early Ashford design. plus the hands are more 40's then 50's. I can't identify the trademark/maker's mark. that might help with the mystery. I will also inquire if Jay knows where his father purchased the watch and if it has been modified.
For the sake of an ID, even if it were an after market case, it would still make this particular watch an Ashford IMO. We have not found anyting else like it to suggest otherwise.

I have permission from a watch collector in Oregon to use the photos of one of his watches.

He also has examples of Benrus, Emerson and Lecoultre watches using this same case design.
