Regulator question.

10 AK running amuck, I noticed the regulator was all the way over on Fast, I've adjusted it back to 'nuetral' but the Watch is still taking off.

How long does it take for the regulator to settle in? ...and, can it break?

If the hairspring is correctly placed in the regulator it should take effect right away.  Sometimes the hairspring is not within the little prongs that hold it and it will have no effect.  Generally when a watch is running way too fast its due to a probelm with the hairspring itself.  Could be a bit of dirt or oil causing some of the coils to stick together or it could have just been bent.

 In my short time with Bulova vintage watches I have found the Hairspring to be the most problematic. I routinely demagnitize the Hairspring and in many cases that fixes the problem. Before today I would take my watches to a repair place and have them demagnitize, but finally...finally...finally today I was able to buy a new demagnitizer.

In fact, I have an ladies watch that was running very fast. I passed it over the demagnitizer and it was amazing to see it begin to run properly. It seems to be within a few seconds per day. Pretty good...

 May also be magnetized.  AFAIK 10AK movement was just before non-magnetic alloy hairsprings.

I agree with both Jay and geezer. If you have made the adjustment and seen no change at all in performance (good or bad) then i'ts possible the hairspring is not sitting within the regulator prongs. However if the spring is sitting correctly and has a descent beat then it may possibly be due to a dirty or magnetized hairspring, causing the spring coils to snap together as it pulses.

Have a good look with a magnify glass tosee what its doing.

 Yep, something is causing the hairspring to stick together at the coils.  Oil, a kink, or magnetism.
