When working on these vintage Bulova movements, does it matter what position the stem is in before removing it? Does it need to be fully in ( winding ) ... fully out (hand set) or does it not matter?

I would recommend having the crown set in (winding). Turn the setting lever screw a half turn at a time until the crown and stem come out.
Others may have a different method.
You may also find that in removing the stem the yoke and setting lever spring my pop out of position, resulting in the need to remove the hands and dial to correct. Although this happens more in older watches from the 1920s.
Thanks for the advice! I have made the mistake of unscrewing it too far and needing to take off the hands and dial ... haha! Now I tend to probably not unscrew it enough , so I have to pull pretty hard to get it out. The reason I made this post, was when doing it where I have to pull hard ... I've noticed a few times I can get the crown back in far enough it will wind, but it won't go easily the last 1/8" so I can get it tightened again without about 15 solid minutes of moving the stem around and pushing until it finally fully seats. Maybe I just need another 1/8 to 1/4 turn to give it more clearance? Its appreciated ---
