Watch Description

1978 Bulova Accutron Date and Day. Two tone case. Brushed stainless with a gold bezel ring. 2 tone band. Silver face with gold indices. Day and date with Roman numerals at 12, 6 and 9. Day wheel is English/French.

Interesting movement referred to (by Bulova Manual) as a Stepping Motor Quartz (S.M.Q.) -with Accuset button. When battery is replaced, you pull out the crown when the second hand hits 12 and depress the button to synchronize the watch. Very cool feature that doesn't appear to have been offered for very long.

I got the watch with no battery in it as parts/repair, seller stated it "Hasn't been worn and has been sitting a very long time". Condition seems to indicate that was true. The only wear worth mentioning is on the band clasp.  Put in a new battery and much to my surprise, it started running. Followed the Bulova instructions, stopped the watch with second hand pointing at 12 and hit the button. Watch ran really fast for about 1 minute and then calibrated , slowed back down and keeps literally to the second perfect time.

Band has a tuning fork logo on clasp, as does the crown. Although, I can't find a matching ad, I found one that appears to be the same casing with date only from 1979 ( "D" in first ad below) and one featuring "Accuset" from 1979 as well. I would like to think the band is original - it was on the watch when I received it and a perfect match.

Quick set day/date with crown pulled out to the first click.

Nice looking Accutron Quartz Date & Day. Good write-up on the procedures following a battery install.

Thanks, Ken. I emailed a PDF file (12 pages) of the 1979 manual for these 242 series movements to Stephen to add to the site.

Really nice find Bob.  Accuset seems like it was a cool feature.  Makes you wonder why they didn't keep it going.  This wasn't a cheap watch at $225.  Congrats on getting it going!

Thanks, Kathy. I normally shy away from quartz movement watches, but this one really caught my eye and....... well, you know.....had to have it.

That's well over $800 in today's money, and they sold a lot of these. My customers bring them in from time to time, and if they have been well treated, they seem to have few issues. I have one myself.
