Hello all, I recently bought a watch and I cant figure out what it is. It looks like an Alden but the thing that is throwing me is that it has a 21j movement? I cant find anything with a 21j movment in this style. Second question is since it is a little dirty, would it be worth it to have it cleaned up or would it take away from the value?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Service the Movement, Clean the Case and install a new Crystal. If the Dial is original, which it appears to be I wouldn't touch it at this point.

Agreed.... you have a very nice, clean, original looking 1940 Ambassador. Looks to have the original band, which is not easy to find when it's gone.
Thank you for the information. I was going crazy waiting for the 3 days for my profile to get approved so I could ask since I knew someone on this site would know what it was. I thought that the band was original, it definately looked the period.

I know we don't do valuations here, but I'd pay more for the band than I would the watch...and it's a very nice watch!
Yeah, finding an original bracelet band or even a period correct one is sometimes a greater feat than finding the watch.
Still at ends if I should have the dial cleaned. It would look alot better but I also dont want to de-value the watch at the same time.

Here you want to tread very litely. Quite often attempts to clean a dial will damage it to the point that re-finishing will be required. Your dial is very clean for it's age so I would leave it original if I were the owner.
I would use some rodico (like putty, from Jules Borel) to clean the white part of the dial NOT the black printing as it may take it off. It usually works to take off a lot of the surface dirt.
